Evergreen Museum and Library

A visit to the Evergreen Museum and Library takes you back in time to the Gilded Age, when Baltimore’s Garrett family was railroad royalty. The opulent 1878 Evergreen Mansion was their 48-room estate situated on 26 immaculately landscaped acres. A tour of the home-turned-museum lets you explore their collection of decorative arts, sculpture, rare books, manuscripts, and other treasures, which number over 50,000 items. The estate is also home to the Bakst Theater, hosting performances by internationally famous chamber music groups and soloists, as well as lectures, films, and other events. Admission to the museum is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5 for students and children. See website for tour schedules.

Ethel and Ramone’s: Chesapeake Bay Cajun

Diners say “laissez les bons temps rouler” – let the good times roll – when it comes to Ethel and Ramone’s. It’s Maryland-style Creole cuisine melding the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay with traditional Louisiana recipes. Try their authentic gumbo, a savory mix of seafood and sausage simmered in a rich broth that takes days to achieve its uniquely exotic flavor. Jumbo lump crab cakes are another favorite, served with mashed potatoes and a creamy remoulade sauce. Oyster po’boys, jambalaya, red beans and rice, shrimp Creole, and fried chicken are some of the other culinary stars featured on the menu. A friendly vibe, attentive service, and reasonable prices make Ethel and Ramone's a great dining experience.

American Visionary Art Museum: Ways of Seeing

What’s visionary art? It’s the creative endeavor of self-taught artists, who express themselves in whatever medium their inner voice describes. When it comes to the American Visionary Art Museum, that means it can be it can be art made with toothpicks, yarn, bottle caps, old watches, and fishing line, as well as paint and clay. You get to experience a variety of fantastic creations, including a replica of the Lusitania made entirely of toothpicks, a throne crafted from bottle caps, and a bench covered with whoopee cushions! This isn’t your grandmother’s stodgy museum where paintings are carefully placed and bored security guards stand in the corner asleep on their feet. It’s exciting, stimulating, and fun. Admission is $15.95 for adults, $13.95 for seniors, and $9.95 for children and students.
